City Rolls Out Empire Trash Bins, Staten Island's North Shore Next in 2027
Mayor Mamdani and the Sanitation Department installed Brooklyn's first residential Empire Bins this week, part of the city's push to get trash bags off the sidewalks. More than 700 of the large on-street containers are going into Downtown Brooklyn and nearby neighborhoods.
Staten Island's North Shore is among six districts scheduled to get the bins in 2027. Buildings with more than 30 units will get Empire Bins, while smaller homes already use wheeled containers. The city aims to containerize trash citywide by the end of 2031.
