MTL-YID: A family goes to sleep in their Toronto home. At 3:40 in the morning, three masked men break in with guns and a hammer.

The father and both adult daughters are shot. The parents are also struck with the hammer. All four end up in hospital, two with life-altering injuries.

Then there's this. Police say one attacker appears to have been shot by his own accomplice. He walked into hospital that same day. Hospitals in Ontario must report gunshot wounds, and officers questioned him there. But police say they didn't yet have enough information to arrest him.

He was discharged Friday afternoon.

Only hours after he left did investigators connect him to Thursday's home invasion. Now he's wanted across Canada, while the other two suspects remain unidentified.
