MTL-YID: Canada is working toward becoming the European Union's first "Associate Member," Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday after the Canada-EU summit in Montreal.

The summit also brought the substantive conclusion of digital trade negotiations and plans for deeper student exchanges.

No new travel or residency rights take effect from these announcements.

The PM says he hopes to finish negotiations in June.
