Poland is facing a major constitutional crisis after the president of its Constitutional Tribunal and his deputy were suspended, sparking accusations of a coup and protests outside the court in Warsaw. Riot police surrounded the building, with clashes and several arrests reported.
President Karol Nawrocki cut short a foreign trip and returned to Warsaw, accusing Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government of illegally taking over the court. Tusk defended the move as necessary to restore judicial independence, while the U.S. ambassador urged both sides to avoid escalation.
