Verrazzano Bridge Expected to Reopen Around 3 PM as Marathon Brings Record Crowds

A record 60,000 runners arrived on Staten Island this morning for the 50th NYC Marathon, starting from Fort Wadsworth. Ferries, buses and park-and-ride shuttles were packed, with roads around the start area closed and heavy security in place.

The Verrazzano Bridge has been closed to traffic since 7 AM and is expected to begin reopening at about 3 PM, though times may shift. The Staten Island Expressway, Richmond Terrace, Bay Street and Lily Pond Avenue are among the roads affected.
