Lithium Batteries Spark Second Sanitation Truck Fire in a Week

Firefighters put out a fire in the back of a Sanitation truck at Midland Avenue and Patterson Avenue on Sunday morning, after lithium-ion batteries thrown in the trash caught fire. No one was hurt.

It is the second such fire in a week, after one at Sand Lane and Olympia Boulevard on Thursday. The city reminds residents that throwing lithium batteries in the trash or recycling is illegal and dangerous. They can be dropped off at the Staten Island Special Waste Site, 1000 West Service Road, off the West Shore Expressway.
